THE SPARK TO BEGIN AGAIN

Then Noah remembered.

Noah Kahan remembered EBA’s and Dragon Juice in his Nardwuar interview. That moment helped spark the comeback.

Watch the EBA’s moment on YouTube ↗Interview by Nardwuar. Watch the original video on YouTube.

The story of Everything But Anchovies

Family roots. A community comeback.

Leo “Buddy” Dowd’s eleven children built EBA’s, with Maureen Dowd Bogosian leading the charge and generations of employees alongside them. Upper Valley residents and families sustained it year-round. Dartmouth students, the school community and returning alumni filled its busiest occasions and carried its reputation beyond Hanover.

Today, Buddy’s grandson Eddie Bogosian is carrying the food vision into a third-generation return. Noah Kahan’s recollection helped spark renewed attention to a story that began decades earlier.

Original gear is available now. Familiar food, pop-ups and local partnerships are taking shape, with Dragon Juice, more sauces and frozen pizza in development. Each step helps rebuild relationships and support what comes next, including a longer-term ambition for an Upper Valley gathering place. No reopening plan is confirmed.

“How can one be specific when talking about a place that was a present fixture from childhood, middle school, high school, college, and adult hood? … To say myself, my family, and my friends LOVED EBA's, is an understatement. … This place turned into a bit of everything for me growing up. … From a comfort food spot after being dragged through Hanover for errands with mom (fries with ranch, BLT pizza), to the only reliably good spot to feed us when mom was at work. … There are far too many specifics to mention. … But what does come to mind were the people and the experience they brought to each of the regulars. … I can remember, vividly, Dani at the front of the house having some smart comment for me when I walked in, never offered a menu (didn't need it), and walked right to the same booth each time (directly across from the cooler and TV). … Whenever you popped through the dining room with the pen in your ear ready to talk whatever sports moment was happening at that time. … All while this happened, customers were streaming in and out of the front door, but each were taken care of while those of us who frequented the joint were also taken care of. … EBA's was the last real and authentically local thing in Hanover, in my opinion. … It didn't matter where you went to school, what job you had, or what you did for work. … You sat down in a green booth and were treated as you treated others. … Something so simple is so completely lost and man, I really wish I knew we were in the good ole days before we left them.”

“Myself and all the other Hanover High Footlighters (theater) kids would come to EBAs after our last show for every play! This tradition started well before my time and it was the best. We’d finish up at the high school just before midnight cleaning up the set and all walk over to EBAs for great food, drinks, and reminiscing. I personally was a regular at EBAs and remember always sitting in one particular booth in the corner for HOURS with my friends whether we were just hanging out, killing time, or actually being productive with our homework. I think everyone at Hanover High felt the loss when EBAs was no longer around 💔”

“A local DJ (Shara) and I would host gigs at the local restaurants and late night bars. Canoe club, India Queen etc. At the end of the night every one from the events would head over to EbA’s. Sometimes I’d order pizza for the cleanup crew or a bunch of us would head over to EBA’s once we were done. It was such a lifesaver for us! Being so delicious and being open! ALWAYS loved the place. Literally cried when it closed its doors. There are so many memories of Hanover that are gone that I wish were back. I’d personally open FOLK again if I could! I’m very excited for EBA’s to be coming back!”

“Grew up in the Upper Valley! EBAs was a staple night out for my mom, my 3 siblings, and me. Not only could four picky eaters always find something to eat, but there was also always pre-, mid-, and post-dinner entertainment via the Trivial Pursuit cards at every table. Of course, us elementary and middle-school aged kids rarely got a single answer right as the cards were probably printed before any of us were born. But quizzing our mom on old albums and sports teams was the real fun. Miss you, EBAs ❤️”

Unfortunately for them my buddies and i where leaving at the same time, and since it was our spot and we felt like the frat guys actions where the ultimate sign of disrespect, we called them out when we alm exited ebas. Well needless to say they didnt like what we had to say. Things started to get loud. And then next thing we know fist are flying and one of my buddys the late colby shambo has one of the frat guys in a head lock amd is yelling "Always tip at and pay at ebas.if you dont fucking like it take your ass home" The frat dudes rushed off but of course the folowing night we ended up in therr frat and the called us the ebas enforcers.(side note they tried for a rematch and failed). “My first real job was at EBA’s. I would come every day after school and fold pizza boxes. I got .10 a piece for the regular ones and .05 for the piccolo (small). I’d make 7$ or 8$ a day in about 20 minutes. I would find every nook and cranny I could find to make that little extra. I would fill out my slip and Micky would pay me out of th till. Because I was so fast and only there a short time, Micky would joke “you have the highest paid job in town. Some of that money would go into the Galaga arcade machine. It was always the place to go after school and I worked there as a bus boy in the following years.”

Good people, good vibes, (I know I have some videos of Lucas dancing on the line) great food, and a basement that I remain 100% convinced was haunted. Even though my EBA’s era was brief, I still have my shirts all these years later. Seeing the EBA’s legacy continue makes me genuinely happy. Some places are more than just restaurants; they become part of people’s stories, even if only for a little while. Legends never die. Love you guys. ❤️🍕”

“A short essay I wrote for college included EBA’s! Enjoy ☺️ In the dead of winter on cold snowy nights. I would visit Thompson Arena as a child with my best friend on the weekends. Around and around the arena we would walk. Pausing just for a moment while the crowd cheered. Hunger would strike us instantaneously. The smell of Everything but Anchovies’s clam chowder would hit our nasal cavities; as if we've just discovered it for the first time, everytime. We were precise with the Tabasco and Oyster cracker ratio. Slightly spicy as it warmed our souls from the inside out. We would sit and cheer waiting next to the tunnels hoping to catch a puck. Maybe even receive a high five from the Dartmouth goalie. The period would inevitably end. What would we do for 8 more minutes? Eat some more. This time one of the arenas hot fresh churros. The cinnamon and sugar would coat our lips and laps. The late night was filled with laughter. I can't remember the last time it was that Arviso and I went to Thompson Arena. For what was our last time as children. It was that upcoming summer we found out Arviso would be moving to Michigan. My life never quite was the same since. I stopped playing Hockey. I slowly stopped going to games. I would only then start watching hockey from the living room. Time has passed. 14 years to be exact. Everything but Anchovies has been closed for roughly 10 years now. A well loved local restaurant. Catering to Dartmouth, its community members and gatherers of the hockey community. I had no hot clam chowder to look forward to. My expectations were, in other words, low. This arena looks the same as I last saw it. Jersey’s the same dark green color they always have been. Vests of security are the same bright yellow. The churros are still coming out identical to how I remember them. Hot, soft, covered in cinnamon and sugar. This time, I don't crave them. This time I look at them thinking of all the wonderful memories I had here. I sat in the same seats I used to. Watching the game and noticing children play around the tunnel. They were just as I was waiting for the team to pass through for a high five. Like the clam chowder, without my best friend this memory will stay a memory.”
Everyone had a particular obsession with the ranch dressing at EBAs. Star YesmanLocal forever! Read full memory
“Everyone had a particular obsession with the ranch dressing at EBAs. Whether it was dunking a slice of buff chick pizza in it, drowning a recently-delivered late night to-go container of fries, or letting it sit idly by while devouring a chicken sandwich, it was always there. A few of my high school friends were older than me and went off to college a year or two before I did. While this may have seemed tragic at the time, it had its upsides — I had more time with EBAs. Two friends in particular, both in Colorado, hadn’t been able to make it back home in a while. We’d talk and text and joke about missing the food, the late nights, and the ranch. It occurred to me that I had the power to do something about this, and via the magic of ice packs and the USPS, I surprised them and shipped an entire pint of EBAs ranch to Colorado. We’re all crossing our fingers that the place that fueled our childhoods and high school experiences will make a comeback, and with it a renewed sense of community, a heavy dose of nostalgia, and some damn fine condiments!”

It was not taken lightly by 99 rock executives but the staff loved it.”
